I first used this book during a long-term sub for a maternity leave, at a small private school. I recently purchased it for use at my new job, a very urban, resource-poor elementary school in a large public school system. At the first school I used it for 3-year olds, 4's, and preschool. Here, I'm using it for Kindergarten, First, and some of Second Grade- which is above where it was intended to be used, but these kindergarteners have not had preschool, and are probably on the same level as my 3s were in musical development. The book is full of songs, fingerplays, stories, activities, that engage students in developing musical skills- the book calls it being tuneful, beatful, and artful. Basically recognizing and singing melodies on their own and with others, feeling the pulse of music and being able to move, sing, etc to it, and being able to be moved by music, describe it with emotion, etc.The sample lessons are divided into many activities, with continuity and repetition. You can pick and choose what works with your kids, but it's a great framework. Part of the reason I decided to use this book was that I have very large classes now, and quite simply, my kids have a ridiculously short attention span. There's no WAY I can take the 50 minutes I have, with the 30 kids I have, and do one unified lesson. But as long as I vary my activities, with about 5-10 minutes for each, I can usually keep them under control.I usually do a beginning pitch exploration exercise, where they echo me, and describe the simple melody- up, down, etc. If they're responding well then I'll have them do the same with each student singing a melody for the class to echo. Next, a simple song, perhaps with movement. Then a story or a new term, or our composer of the month. Then I get them all up in another area with some movement, wear them out a little. Then we sit back down for another quieter activity, another song, perhaps an instrument or more solo singing . . I keep them moving!Eventually I'm wanting the supplimental books, to add more variety, but for now I'm happy.
